Living Well: Surround Yourself with Beauty

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

As I sit here working at my desk and look around at the space I've created, I feel happy and peaceful. It's not perfect, rather a work in progress and it doubles as our guest bedroom. However, I've really enjoyed the process of surrounding myself with beautiful things. Pretty silver frames filled with beautiful patterned paper, a vase with pale pink peonies (my favorite flowers), the scent of a natural orange reed diffuser to lightly fragrance the room and a sparkly chandelier just to name a few.

Call me type A but I don't feel settled when I'm surrounded by clutter. Working at the kitchen table with  visible dishes in the sink only distract me as they beckon to be washed. Keeping up with cleaning, removing excess papers, clutter and unnecessary items from a space leaving just your favorites and the most practical and useful items creates a serene environment.

There are so many ways to incorporate a little bit of pretty into each room of your home, even if you don't have a large budget. Whether it's a few fresh blooms in a pretty vase, a small piece of gorgeous fabric that recovers and transforms the seat of an otherwise boring office chair, beautiful keepsakes like sand and seashells displayed in apothecary jars that remind you of a favorite trip. Even an elegant mirror in your entry that you use daily to do a quick hair and outfit check on the way out the door. It's so important to feel good about the space you live in, whether it's a tiny studio apartment or a sprawling homestead.

I couldn't agree more with this quote. A few weeks ago I wrote a post about saving your best for someday and how sometimes we keep items that are so valuable or beautiful to us that we forget to enjoy them because we get caught up in tucking them away for a special occasion. Since that post I've been using my new Potterybarn dishes regularly.

I highly recommend donating or selling any 'ugly' dishes, glassware, cutlery and kitchenware at a yard sale and keep only the most beautiful pieces daily. Only keep and have on hand stain-free and lovely dish towels as well as plush bathing towels. Sleep in soft, luxurious sheets, the best you can afford. Carefully choose scented candles and room sprays that make you feel energized or are soothing and relaxing to set a mood. Wear your favorite perfume 'just because', even if you're spending the day solo. Add a few of your favorite potted flowers in a variety of hues to your balcony, patio or front porch to surround yourself with colorful cheer vs. the hardy green plants that require less maintenance and perhaps a bit less money. It's about joy, spring and summer always seem so short, the extra few dollars you spend will be so worth it!

Pick one room in your home that is just for you-maybe it's the laundry room, a craft room (if you're lucky enough to have the space), an office or a teeny backyard that is filled with things that speak beauty to you. Surround yourself with colors that make you feel happy and inspired and scents and textures that make you feel alive! Even while you're doing the laundry, you can be surrounded with beauty and feel refreshed.

What lovely things have you incorporated into your home to surround yourself with beauty? What is your favorite room in your home?

Apartment Therapy

Friday, June 10, 2011

I love nothing more than seeing someone recognized for their efforts and talents, especially when they least expect it! A few days ago my friend Rodellee had her L.A. home featured in Apartment Therapy and was so thrilled that she shared with all of us on Facebook. Just 2 days later, my blogger friend Kristin had her beautiful home featured there too and shared her excitement with her blog readers. These are two talented ladies with two very different styles. :)

First up is my friend Rodellee, we met here in Orlando, she then moved to L.A. with her hubby about 1.5 years ago and has had nothing but the best of success with everything she's pursued there-I'm so proud of her. She is a fabulous stylist, is the owner of Adore Vintage online shop and really knows how to work a camera too! It's only natural that her vintage style and love of mid century modern design would grace not only their home but the online pages of a fabulous design website also. Here is her feature in Apartment Therapy where you can click to see more images. She just moved on Wednesday into a new home and I'm look forward to seeing what she does with it!

Next is my sweet friend Kristin who I've know for a couple of years now, we met online via blogging and she always has the most fun projects and is ultra talented as well. I don't know how she finds the time between caring for her boys and hubby but she's really done a lot with her home. I can really relate to her personal sense of style: a cozy cottage feel with traditional and rustic elements that has a warm but clean look and really feels like a home. She is the blog writer behind My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia and owner of the Etsy Shop 'Uncommon Linens'. I hope you'll check out Kristin's feature in Apartment Therapy also as there are many more great images of her home!

How about you? Have you, your home or even your business every been featured somewhere that surprised you or that you're proud of? I'd love to hear about it and share a link if you can!

Happy Weekend!

Pure Inspiration: Blog Posts I'm Loving!

Friday, July 23, 2010

In my spare time over the past couple days, I've been catching up on a little blog reading. Between delightful decor, fresh & fun ideas, crisp color and fabulous fashion, these posts have provided a lot of inspiration for me. I thought I'd share some of my favorites with you in the hopes that they'll inspire you as well. I hope you'll take a couple minutes to enjoy each one and maybe even discover a new blog or two. You won't be disappointed! :)

1. The Colors of Summer- This blog post that Tara of Between You & Me shares, is pure photo bliss. She takes all the goodness of summer and wraps it up with a pretty bow. All of the color really evokes the feelings of 'happy' and 'fun'.

2. Master Bedroom: Mini Makeover- Kate of Centsational Girl has impeccable taste and her designs are clean, gorgeous and budget friendly. Her master bedroom is stunning and what she did with her walls makes me want to pull out some paint and a brush and get started! This master bedroom is elegant and glamorous.

3. Thirty Before 30-Beth of 'Hello, Splendor' shares her bucket list of sorts as she approaches 30. I love lists like this and what I especially enjoyed is that her list is totally attainable. Maybe this will inspire you to create a list of the things you'd love to complete this summer or finish before the year is up!

4. The Harvest- Erin, the blogger behind Rare & Beautiful Treasures, shares one of her greatest leaps of faith which I found so inspiring. She also has a stunning home that she has created over time with her hubby and always posts the best decor photos! She writes from the heart, loves God and desires to do all that the Lord has for her. As I find myself walking into a place of great change and transition myself, I could really relate. I won't say any more, you need to go read her story!

5. Pink & Green Thursday: Beautiful Things Like You!- I recently discovered the blog Pink Preppy Lilly Lover. Trish  fills this blog with everything lovely. Like me, she adores preppy style which includes the latest from Lilly Pulitzer and anything southern,  lovely and sophisticated. I loved this particular post because there was so much gorgeous eye candy (hop over and you'll see what I mean) and a sweet little surprise at the end too-a great giveaway! Oh, and if you ADORE Paris like I do, you'll love this post she shared back in March-the photos stunning!

Have a wonderful weekend and stay cool,  possibly spending time poolside! This past week hit 105 degrees in Orlando which even sounds insane. If anyone is looking for me on Sunday, I can be found at the beach! ;)

Loving What You've Got

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Today's post is a candid look into my thoughts towards my home.  I want to be open and real and put it all out there in the hopes that my little story might help someone else. I've been having an unhealthy relationship with my house. I've spoken negatively about it to others, not felt proud to be its owner and have secretly delighted in the thought of eventually moving out of it one day in the near future.

I have the wonderful privilege of often times working in some very expensive and beautiful homes -the kind you see in magazines. And while my clients hire me to transform their already lovely homes into something even more beautiful, arriving home after spending my days there has sometimes left me feeling a bit deflated when it comes to my own home. For 3 years (of the first 3.5 years that I've lived in this home) I have disliked many aspects of it and could easily list a hundred things that I'd love to change from landscaping to structure and finer details like the doors, kitchen flooring, etc.

Nearly four years ago (before we were married and before I moved down here from Toronto) we had planned to buy a beautiful, new home together. I was so excited about going through that selective process and anticipation of our first home together as a couple. We did begin the house hunting process within a new home development but quickly realized with the housing market in FL being what it was at that time, it just didn't make sense. So, we currently live in what was my hubby's grandparent's  3/2 home and the home he grew up in, which includes some of their vintage furniture (thankfully I was able to talk him into dontating the ugly floral sofa)-sentimental for him, not so much for me. During our first married year I did have some limited resources to change the paint colors and make some very minor changes, but not much else. I had started to wonder if it would ever look and feel the way I had envisioned. Working in the design industry doesn't help I suppose. Likewise, I love reading design magazines and blogs but after seeing such beautiful transformations and not always having the time or personal design budget for such projects myself, it at times has made me feel that my house is inadequate. That was until about 6 months ago.

So what all of a sudden changed you might be wondering? I had to make the decision to see things differently. I read the book 'The Secret' for the first time 6 months ago after hearing about it for so long and realized that this was an area that I really wanted to work on if I was ever going to love my home. If you haven't read the book, it is all about bringing what you want into your life by visualizing it, the laws of attraction, power of positive thinking and not only dreaming of it but whole heartedly believing you will in fact receive it without a single ounce of doubt. I'm not into new age stuff, I believe in God and the power of prayer, but I thought this couldn't hurt, after all it's about changing your thoughts in a profound way.

Every day I started to focus on what was 'right' with our humble little abode. It's 50-year-old flaws started to become charming, and little by little I started to see the older hand-me-down vintage furniture from P's grandparents (that I was dying to get rid of before) as wonderful DIY transformation opportunities. I've even changed my design style a bit to allow for more vintage charm and have even embraced our 90's oak kitchen cabinets which I may or may not paint out at some point.

What's funny is I am always able to have this positive point of view within so many other areas of my life but was having such a hard time when it came to our home. I think it had to do with something deeper though-pride. Even though they've seen my portfolio, I felt that if clients or even my new friends saw our home they'd wonder how it was that I was a Designer. LOL. But the truth is that we spend our money on world travel, not home renovations. Hopefully one day we will have enough for both. For now, it is just us two so we like the freedom of travel. ;)  As I spent more and more time writing my books (and this blog) and less time working in large, elaborate homes in favor of smaller and quicker design projects for the everyday home owner, I started to feel more myself. You may have noticed that I added an  e-Design services page to this blog. I really enjoy creating mood boards for DIY home owners and those that are just looking for some fresh inspiration for their home. While I've always worked within all budgets, somehow I am enjoying working on the smaller, more challenging homes so much more. Hmm, maybe because they remind me of my own home and all of the endless possibilities!

Once I stopped fighting my house and started shifting my mindset, I started seeing so much more possibility. Part of it was embracing the fact that we were NOT moving any time soon, so I just accepted it and I am now embracing what I do have. I love that we have a home with a new roof that keeps the heavy Florida rain out day after day each summer, a floor plan that allows us each to have our own home offices while still making room for guests and a kitchen that is small yet is the hub of so many wonderful meals. I may not have my dream kitchen, a stunning backyard for entertaining or a large walk-in closet to house my clothes, but to me this is home. It is where we laugh together, work at our own pace, live boldly and love deeply.

It's so easy to find all of the imperfections in our home, our life or ourselves. but as I learned in the secret and more importantly my relationship with my home, the more that we dwell upon what we don't want, the more it will actually appear in our lives, because we are in essence calling upon it without even realizing it. This is because in life whether it's something we desire or dislike, what we focus on and think about is what will come our way. So, why not focus on what we do have, what we do love, which aspects of our body that we're most proud of instead of the ones we always feel still need improvement.

I'm not suggesting that we cannot think about what we'd want to improve upon-we should. However, instead of saying 'I really need to lose 10 lbs' or 'I have to quit smoking'. Think of it in a different way- 'I'm working towards a more fit and healthy body. I'm detoxifying my body now for a future of health so I can enjoy my life and my family.' Then, visualize what you want to look like. In the case of weight loss you can cut out images from a magazine if that works for you or pull out an old photo of yourself from years gone by. This involves focusing on what will be instead of everything that isn't right at the present moment.

How about YOU? Have you had to shift your thinking about your car, job, house, your body, spouse/children or another relationship that wasn't everything that you wanted or dreamed it would be? Have you read The Secret? Did it help you in a positive way? I'd love to hear from you!

P.S. Sorry for the long post, sometimes background information is helpful when telling one's story. I'm trying to work on making future posts shorter so you won't all fall asleep. *wink*

Organizing Inspiration in Pictures

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Get inspired and excited about organizing through these pictures below. After all, a picture IS worth a thousand words!

I love decorating, but more than pretty decor, I couldn't survive in a home that was disorganized. I am constantly on the hunt for new storage bins, totes, baskets and fun gadgets that solve more than one problem so I'll have less STUFF in our home.

One of my favorite books is REAL SIMPLE solutions. If you are a fan of the magazine, you will LOVE this book! It not only shares the most creative ideas and tips for each area in your home, it also allows you to reuse and re-purpose what you already have in multiple ways so you can save money too!

The first three photos below are straight out of the book and show some great ways that you can organize your stuff by turning old items into new storage solutions.

QUICK ORGANIZING SOLUTIONS

This next group of photos shows how you can add more storage to your current space to not only create the look you want but also add more function to each rom.

INSPIRATION PHOTOS

1. Storage Baskets

Storage baskets, bins and totes instantly make a space feel more organized  and give items a permanent and defined home.

2. Magazine Holders

Magazine holders are great. I have a pretty set on my desk in pale pink and another set in my office closet. They are the perfect solution for those that want to keep back copies of magazines or file away new ones that have not yet been read and they can add an elegant touch to any home office. Quick tip: Another options is to tear out the pages you like and file them in clear plastic pages in a binder vs. keeping dozens of dust-collecting publications.

3.  Furniture with Storage

Furniture with storage comes in many shapes and sizes. Whether it be a storage bench in your mudroom, entryway, a storage ottoman for your living room or a banquette for your kitchen area, storage with furniture is where it's at! We must make the most of each room and each space and this is a great way to accomplish that. When the storage spaces are open, use pretty, matching baskets to create a uniform look.

4. Easy Cabinet Installs

Sometimes, after you've tried everything else, you'll realize that a cabinet is in order to keep things neat. Your local home improvement store or any discount retailer will sell easy-to-install and relatively inexpensive cabinets which can be used in laundry rooms, craft rooms, home offices, garages and closets. For a more polished look, you could opt for a custom built in cabinet as shown above. I am loving this laundry room!

5. Shelves and Wall Mounted Systems

Potterybarn does a great job of creating elegant looking systems for every room in the home. Grouping smaller like items together is the key to organizing success and visual beauty. Small collections are best displayed on a shelf,  in one particular area or on a single wall. These photos are proof that not all beautiful spaces need to have everything tucked away and out of sight.

6. Craft Storage

You could also easy transform your craft area into a pretty space by using some bright, punchy fabrics with hints of elegance and sophistication. You can also take regular cardboard boxes and wrap them in delicious patterned paper or fabric remnants to give them new life. A fresh coat of white or colorful paint can instantly transform an old or salvaged dresser into something beautiful.

If you are committed to becoming more organized this year, there is a challenge running for the month of February on the Organizing Junkie blog. Laura's blog button is also in my left sidebar. She's got a fun challenge for full rooms and small spaces with prizes to boot for several lucky winners! So, what are you waiting for? Will YOU be joining me in organizing for a fresh space this month? My laundry room/storage space is next on my list.

Here's to a clutter-free and organized home!

What Are YOU Doing For Thanksgiving?

Thursday, November 12, 2009

My husband and I just solidified our plans for Thanksgiving. We're heading to my inlaws home where there will be about 12 people. My mother-in-law loves to entertain and cook so it only seemed fitting that she would be hosting yet another holiday gathering. In fact, she hosts almost every year, but really enjoys showing off her skills and she is a natural.

I typically bring a special homemade pie, usually pumpkin, and some other appetizers or treats for everyone. Once we have children or we move into a larger more open concept home, I can almost guarantee that I'll be hosting at some point, but in the meantime I'm enjoying not having a mess in my kitchen and lists full of things to prepare.

I love to decorate and host small dinner parties but my husband and I aren't the kind of couple that enjoy having more than about 8 people (including ourselves) for a dinner or hosting large parties in our home. I guess you could say we are a bit more private when it comes to our homestead and we enjoy more intimate gatherings.

We have a smaller kitchen that is not very open which can be frustrating because all of the fun and conversation is behind my kitchen wall (in the living room) and after preparing several courses I feel like I've missed out on the whole point, which is to catch up with family and friends. Because of this, I usually try to do most of my prep work beforehand to make dinner gatherings as seamless as possible and my crockpot is one of my favorite tools in the kitchen. The first year we were married our oven broke down right before family arrived for the holidays and I wound up making an entire Christmas dinner for five with my handy crockpot and it turned out great!

With this wonderful holiday being just 2 weeks away, I got to wondering what you all had planned for Thanksgiving day. Do you host a dinner in your home? Are you like me and bring goodies to a family's home or do you alternate year after year taking turns with other family members? What are your favorite dishes to bring or cook?

If you're hosting this year and you want some great Thanksgiving or Fall decorating ideas, click HERE for some beautiful indoor and tablescape ideas and HERE for some gorgeous outdoor decor. If you want to bake something other than the traditional pumpkin pie for dessert, take a peek at this heavenly caramel apple pie recipe that will leave everyone wanting more!

Perfect, Pretty Pillows

Friday, October 30, 2009
Throw pillows are such a great way to change the look of a space. Color, pattern and texture can really add a lot to a sofa, chair or bed. It is a great way to keep up with the seasons too. Linens and light, airy fabrics are best for spring and summer but warmer, richer colors along with heavier fabrics like burlap; velvet, and thick cotton are wonderful this time of year. Take a look at some of this season's prettiest pillows.

Fall-Inspired Pillows

2.  Chocolate Blue Mirage Pillow

5. Cafe Stripe Pillow

6. Felt Roses Pillow

Do you switch out your pillows with the seasons or use the same ones year round? Which one here evokes your sense of style?
