Cleaning House

Thursday, August 26, 2010

Sorry for my lack of posts lately,  I've been working on a lot of new projects and am managing some new changes around our home too. I'll be back again tomorrow with a a fun celebratory giveaway that you won't want to miss!

Speaking of the house, since today is a cleaning day for me, I thought I'd share how I keep house here at the Davis residence. My friends who know me well know that I love to clean and organize. In fact, they coined a term several years back called 'Karla clean' referring to how involved and detail oriented I am when cleaning. I can thank my dad for that -he taught me well!  It feels so great when everything is sparkling clean, and fresh doesn't it?

Before getting married and moving in with hubby, things in my own home always remained really clean and I loved returning from work or a trip to it that way. Being married presents different challenges, as I've learned over the past 4 years. Learning to work together and seeing how the other person does things is interesting to say the least.

For instance, I'm the type of person who likes to clean up the kitchen sink/counters while preparing food and dinner is cooking so that when everything is done there are virtually no dishes or mess to attend to. Hubby on the other hand is happy to leave them and come back to it when he feels inspired to put them in the dishwasher. LOL. I suppose some would say it's a 'guy' thing. It's probably a good thing that I do 90% of the cleaning because I can spot dirt where my darling husband does not. I've always firmly believed that the inside of a microwave can tell you a lot about the rest of someones home. Don't worry, I don't go snooping in people's microwaves. ;)

Thankfully we don't have any pets to clean up after and being sans kiddos at the moment, cleaning is actually a pretty easy task which kinda makes me a bit fearful for when they eventually arrive. I don't know how you moms do it! Taking care of children and a home is really two full time jobs wrapped up into one-kudos to all of you who take this on everyday! Don't ever let any working mommas or others tell you different!

With the chaotic week that I had last week, I have to say that my usual cleaning schedule became de-railed and instead of my 'a little bit every day' approach, I've left myself with 'a lot in one day' as I want to knock it out so I can enjoy this upcoming weekend.

Here is what my schedule normally looks like for our house of two:

{click to enlarge and view}

Since our master bathroom is SUPER tiny (literally a stand up shower, toilet and sink) there is no way that Paul and I could share, thankfully he let me have the bigger bathroom complete with a linen closet and bathtub. It gets used heavily as the main bathroom for our house and by visitors so I really like to keep on top of it. I sometimes take over the guest bedroom too, it happens to be my office. Aside from that, hubby has a very active dream life, sometimes I hear him mumbling in his sleep and even in a king size bed I'll wake up to the odd arm in my face which is when I take my cue to walk across the hall to the other room. Thankfully he doesn't snore though!

We only use eco-friendly, non-toxic cleaners in our home. Often I'll make my own, here is post on how to make natural cleaning products for your home too. My store-bought favorites are Seventh Generation, Ecover, Mrs. Meyers and Method. I have tried Greenworkds products in the past when I've had coupons but they're still made by the Clorox company who manufactures (and makes the majority of it's profits from) way too many chlorine-based, chemical laden cleaners in my opinion and I don't want to support that.

{Smarty dish is my fav dishwasher tab with white vinegar as my rinse aid. I LOVE Seventh Generation Disinfecting Spray/Wipes-kill germs and they're 100% natural! Ecover and Seventh Generation make a great toilet bowl cleaner-commercial brands and toilet tabs contain loads of neurotoxins like napthalene, the same ingredient in moth balls-avoid them at all costs!}

For those of you who feel overwhelmed with the new school year, beginning a  new job or getting back on track as the summer months wind down and don't know where to begin, perhaps you could use my cleaning chart as an example, filling in the dates as they make sense for you and your home.

How about all of you? What type of cleaning schedule have YOU implemented? Maybe you prefer to cast schedules aside and clean when you feel inspired or when things really pile up? I'd love to hear how you tackle the cleaning in your own home. Maybe you're blessed to have a maid service to help you out or a hubby that takes on more of it? What tips and tricks allow you to spend less time cleaning and more time enjoying life?

Don't forget to come back tomorrow for all the details of our next giveaway! :)

*I am in no way sponsored by or compensated the above mentioned cleaning product companies. These are my personal preferences.

What to Wear: Nautical Necessities

Friday, August 20, 2010

I know, I know I kind of missed the boat on this one in terms of timing (pun intended). Spring is now in our distant past and the end of summer is quickly approaching but I couldn't help but share a few of these nautical lovelies with you. Navy-inspired pieces are a lovely addition to any closet, they happen to be a personal favorite. You may remember me mentioning it in last week's What to Wear post.

Every year during spring/summer you can guarantee that there will be new takes on this old classic. Since my hubby and I are no strangers to a cruise ship, they're perfect for me to pack. They also make for great resort chic options in the winter months while on vacation. While summer is winding down, now is the time to pick up some of these pieces for next year at a steep discount! If you love stripes, anchors, sailboats, coral, boat knots, the sea, red, white, blue and yellow as much as I do, take a look at what I reeled in while surfing the net.

Here are a few sensational sailor finds:

Anthropologie does a great job here of pulling together a few classic pieces that provide this casual, but polished look. While I love a gladiator sandal, a ballet flat would seal the deal on this one for me.

I happen to have something nearly identical that I purchased from White House/ Black Market two years ago except mine has black and white details instead. I love the rope handle detail and pop of red here.

This is still available for $34 at Newport News and I would love to buy it. I'm still debating whether I need it. ;)

This striped bikini top is perfect as is that camel colored tote-so versatile! Throw in a fedora for fun.

Splashes of sunny yellow brighten up an otherwise dark outfit.

This dress, although simple and casual, is quite versatile. Use it in a pinch over a swimsuit as a cover up, glam it up with some gold accessories for lunch with the girls or let it be the perfect dress for a stroll along the beach or a summer BBQ.

I love anchors, I happen to own a silver anchor necklace and I wear it often. This one is a great find at just $12.95!

I'm quite smitten with that cream rope bracelet. Those braided gold wedges would be very versatile but unfortunately would take this 5'9 1/2" girl to to about 6'2! LOL.

Cute one-piece option that is very simple but provides a bit of detail. Would be lovely with a cream sarong or red cover up.

I {heart} ruffles. They are pretty, flirty and fun!

These are said to be very comfy and they are a great shoe for bermuda shorts, a skirt, dress, or even linen pants.

I adore coral, this bib-style necklace is just stunning!

Gorgeous Chanel Bracelet. YES, Please!!

Seersucker shorts are a summer essential. The pleated skirt with red belt and tote bag are a couple of my favorites. This multi-colored bikini is a modern take on nautical.

This image describes my personal style. Classic, conservative and preppy but with a playful twist-a flirty little peek of the shoulder and a simple set of bangles. This look is timeless.

Over the past couple of years I've fallen in love with maxi dresses. I also love bags made from sail cloth. Those anchor adorned flats are a must-have.

I love wide-brim floppy hats-the rope knot is a fun twist. This little clutch/change purse is adorable.

 Glamour at sea.

These shorts are perfect and I love those navy wedges! A timeless red and white striped bikini is always in style.

Do you love nautical style like I do? What are your favorite picks here or your own must-haves for the season?

Speaking of photos, I have updated and personalized the sidebar to include some personal travel photos and some recent ones of my hubby and I too. I love getting to know the lives of other bloggers. It is my hope that with these and  future updates that you'll get to know me a little better too. :) I've also included some new link lists in my sidebar to the Manners Monday series and previous Reader Requests.

Happy Friday! I hope you'll all be spending one of the last weekends of summer doing something fabulous! I'll be working on a family photo wall, celebrating a friend's birthday tomorrow evening and heading to a beautiful local park for an afternoon picnic in the shade on Sunday. What lovely things do YOU have planned?

Jealousy Isn't Pretty

Wednesday, August 18, 2010

We see a regular dose of it on reality TV shows, have experienced being on the receiving end of  it in our own personal and professional lives and may have even fallen prey to these feelings ourselves-I'm talking about Jealousy.

Jealousy ruins more friendships and relationships than anything else I can think of. When you look closely at the word jealousy there's something vital that stands out. The feeling of jealousy makes you feel 'lousy'. It is the inability to be happy for someone else's success or blessings in life because of personal insecurities. Jealousy is an emotion resulting from the belief that another person’s success or happiness somehow diminishes your own. It's a fear that can't be shaken for some-the fear that you might not have or get to experience what someone else has-your dream job, having a beautiful family, your parents attention when a sibling is involved, or an expensive new car. If they have 'x' then where does it leave you?

If you look at the world from a place of abundance instead of scarcity, it’s actually difficult to become envious. Jealousy is very ego-based. Those that have feelings of jealousy must first adopt a scarcity mindset that suggests they're in competition with others. If they get something you have wanted then somehow they won and you lost.

Sometimes it seeps into romantic relationships. The fear of losing that person is so great that it paralyzes the relationship and does not let it become authentic and true. What if's go through your mind and suddenly knowing that person's every move becomes important because you might be able to stop something terrible from happening, like say them meeting someone else. In the end, it never serves anyone well-it alienates and smothers the person  you are trying to keep and hold dear.

The same happens in friendships too. Often it comes out in the form of judging and analyzing someones motives and becoming suspicious. All of a sudden you're an expert on why they did and said x, y, and z. This can often lead to the dissolution of friendships.

Even in the blog world, you'll come across those that are jealous. I've read several blogs recently where bloggers have had to 'address' those that have left a mean anonymous comment or have publicly announced that they will stop allowing anonymous comments altogether. In one case, a reader accused the blogger of copying a particular design that she had in fact created a few years ago and had thankfully documented in many places to rebut the comment and state her case.

The jealous write snarky comments on someones blog or make wrongful accusations about someones character or blog content, to feel better about themselves but usually do not reveal who they are, hiding under the 'anonymous' cloak. Deep down it's not the blog they don't like, it's most likely themselves, their unhappiness and their life. They are jealous of a particular blogger's level of success, don't see their own blog, website, shop or life as the success that they had hoped for and begin to compare themselves with others. As you might remember, I wrote this recent blog post on How to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others. Since jealousy if often associated with comparing, I covered how to stop comparing and live your life to the fullest.

Having said that, I'm so thankful that I haven't encountered that here at all. After all, this blog is for women who want to be classy and fabulous and being jealous or cruel certainly wouldn't qualify as such. I like being able to provide you with the privacy you might desire from time to time in some of the deeper posts, so you can leave an anonymous comment. Thank you for being the kind readers that you truly are who allow me to do so. :)

Another aspect is an ungrateful attitude and spirit. When you are content with and grateful for what you have, there is no need to compare with others or feel jealous over what someone else possesses. If you are not feeling particularly grateful, perhaps now is the time to truly evaluate all of the many wonderful things that exist in your life that you may have overlooked. Think about your family, health, home, transportation, friends, talents, etc. There is bound to be a lot of good there, sometimes you just need to dig deeper.

The important thing to remember in  moments of having jealous thoughts is that while things may seem rosie posie for the person in question today, you don't always know what that person had to endure even ten years ago or for the past several years to get to where they are today. Maybe they had to lose a parent to attain the kind of wealth they now have, given the choice I'm sure they would choose family over money anyday. Perhaps someone who has a lovely family tried for several years to get pregnant or had to undergo several rounds of IVF treatments, etc., to get to where she is today. Maybe unbeknownst to you, a colleague spent their weekends taking classes to build up their resume and experience level to get their well-deserved promotion. We don't know what we don't know, which is why we should never judge a book by its cover or covet what someone else has.

What most don't realize is that jealousy itself is often the root of anger. There are many frustrated people angrily shaking their fists to the heavens because things aren't going as they would like, as they may have planned. They harbor resentment of what another has, and cannot understand why it has not been given to them too.

For those who are interested in a spiritual perspective, God reveals through the Bible that:

"A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones." ~Proverbs 14:30 KJBV

"Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?" ~Proverbs 27:4 NIV

"And I saw that all labor and all achievement spring from man's envy of his neighbor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind." ~Ecclesiastes 4:4 NIV

James 3:16 says, "For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing."

From this wisdom, we learn that wrong thinking produces wrong living. When we have thoughts of jealousy or feelings of envy, our lives will be characterized by confusion, disorder, and worthlessness. Nothing good comes from an evil and jealous spirit. Dealing with jealousy is essential!

We were all meant to have different experiences and blessings in life, and were not meant to all be imitations of one another in appearance, experiences or possessions. I truly believe that we will only be given greater things and opportunities when we can first be satisfied with not only what we have today, but can also rejoice in someone else's blessings. When the people around us are happy and fulfilled, they’ll naturally spread those feelings to those around them. This is something that we should embrace, not avoid. It is far better to be surrounded by people who are doing better than ourselves in some way than by those who are unhappy.
One of the best questions to ask yourself when experiencing such thoughts is, "What am I really afraid of?"

I felt led to write this post and share it with you all, and am hoping it will be a timely blessing to someone who needs to hear it. I don't know a single person that hasn't been affected by jealousy at one time or another in their life. As you know, my passion is to share messages that allow you all to live your best life being the classy women that you dream of being- feeling confident, grateful and joyful.

I wish you all a wonderful week!

Manners Monday: Mixing Business with Dining

Monday, August 16, 2010

Last week's Manners Monday post was all about proper table settings with Part 1 of this three-part series offering tips for everyday table etiquette. For the final installment of the series, today we'll be discussing what to do when mixing business with dining.

Now, I realize that not all of you are wining and dining clients everyday or have power lunches on the agenda, but I think it is an important aspect of dining that everyone should review. You never know when your blog might suddenly take off and you might be invited to meet someone lovely about a big opportunity. Perhaps you're job hunting (as many are right now) and an interested company wants to meet with you over lunch. That is precisely the time that some will begin to panic.

Several years ago I worked as an Account Executive for both software and telecommunications companies. Dining with clients and closing deals over lunch was not at all uncommon, but I'll admit they were not nearly as comfortable as dining with my good friends. In many cases they can actually be downright uncomfortable as male company owners can sometimes have their own agenda as it pertains to women. Be confident and beware. Some of these tips are things you may not have thought of and carry through into your personal dining life as well, I hope you find them useful.

It can be easy to confuse the actual meal with a genuine job interview, but don't make the mistake of thinking that because you've been invited to dinner and they are picking up the tab that you in fact have the job. On the contrary, this is just the beginning. Remember that while good etiquette won't necessarily guarantee you a position in the company, poor etiquette could cost you the job before the meal is even over.

Before the Meal

1. The Mirror Test- This might sound silly but unless you can say you honestly know what you look like while you eat, you should try this technique. This is similar to videotaping a mock interview with a friend so you can see how you're doing. Be aware of how you chew (hopefully quietly and mouth closed). Do you notice crumbs or splattered food on your top? Do you hold your fork delicately or in your fist like a pitchfork? If you're questioning anything at this point on cutting food, etc., read THIS and THIS. Eating in a polite manner will definitely put you at an advantage.

2. Dress for Success- What you choose to wear to a meal interview speaks volumes about not only your level of maturity an professionalism but also the amount of respect you have for the interviewer. It should be no different than a formal office interview, where making a first impression really counts! Make sure you know ahead of time where you'll be dining and make decisions according to the restaurant's dress code too.Wear what  makes you feel comfortable, confident and has a polished, professional look. Avoid anything that requires you to fidget or is not weather appropriate.

In the company of men, it is even more important to pay attention to what you are wearing, you might get the job offer but could send the wrong message. Classy women don't wear short skirts or other revealing clothing to get ahead. There is nothing wrong with showcasing your feminity but be careful about how you go about it. In an interview situation, a solid, dark-colored power suit and a pair of pumps that convey confidence are far better than ruffles, lace and bold prints.

3. Listen and Learn- Use the time before your meals arrive to ask questions and gain more information about the opportunity and company.  Listen carefully to what is being said and use it to your advantage to sell your strengths. While personal details can be exchanged, remember why you are there in the first place-gathering information arms you with what you need to sell yourself and gain a full perspective of what may later be offered to you.

During the Meal

1. Mind Your Manners- Always be polite when interacting with your server and other staff, you can guarantee that the interviewer will be watching you during these times. Avoid ordering alcohol unless the host does and insists that you do as well, in this case limit yourself to one. A combination of nerves and alcohol could leave the wrong kind of lasting impression.

2. What to Order- Be sure to order something that will be easy to eat, without splashing or using your hands-avoid spaghetti or any kind of shellfish. Shrimp can easily be eaten by cutting the tails off if included in your meal, and scallops are simple enough to eat, these are the only exceptions. If you tend to splash with red sauces or soups, you might want to avoid those. Pizza can be ordered but it needs to be sliced with a fork and knife. Order food that you know you'll enjoy and have eaten before, an interview is never the time to try something new. Don't order the most expensive item(s) off the menu, allow your host to order first if possible. When in doubt, order something simple.

Also, listen for clues that the interviewer may offer such as what on the menu is particularly good or what they plan to order, this will avoid embarrassment. Don't spend too much time with the menu, you don't want to appear indecisive or that making decisions doesn't come easy to you.

3. Table Details- Know what on the table is yours, hopefully you've remembered it from the last post on how to set a table. Mistakenly eating your hosts' dinner roll or drinking their water will make you look ridiculous. When it question remember that bread plates go to the left of your main plate and water as well as other drinks will be to your right. Take small bites so that you'll be able to chew quickly and answer your interviewers questions. Of course, you won't actually begin eating until everyone at the table has been served. In this particular scenario you should NEVER send back food. While you are dining out, the point of the meal is an interview, not the food.

Do not place used flatware on the table at any time as this is poor etiquette and not hygeinic, instead use your bread plate or even your main plate and place your silverware on the edge of the plate on a diagonal with the knife's blade facing you.

4. Resist the Urge- Never re-apply lipstick after the meal,  use pressed powder or even pull out a mirror at the table to check your teeth (whether your host is at the table or not). As with any other dining scenario, your cell phone needs to be turned off. Never smoke or excuse yourself from the table to smoke. Even if you are offered a cigarette after the meal always politely decline. Many employers frown upon smoking in companies so you want to avoid this. Don't ever ask for a 'doggy-bag' or takeaway container. Always order something you can finish at the restaurant, wasting food during an interview will not leave a good impression. Get comfortable with the interviewer but not too comfortable. Divulging very personal details, making jokes or negative comments is never a good idea.

After the Meal

1. When the Bill Arrives- Remember that you are the guest of your host (the interviewer) and that they have invited you as such, it is not appropriate to offer to pay the bill even if it placed in front of you. Never offer to share the cost of the meal or provide a tip. If for any reason at all that IS expected (which goes against manners and etiquette) I would advise you to look for another company to work for!

2. Broccoli in your Teeth- If there is any chance at all that you might have cracked pepper, spinach, broccoli or anything else between your teeth, now is the time to excuse yourself and head to the ladies' room, before carrying on your conversation. (Note: It is always an excellent idea to carry a toothbrush or floss in your purse, especially for the purpose of an interview). You never know what could potentially cost you the job. How you present yourself at all times is a reflection of how you would represent their company.

3. You're Just Not that Into Them-So, what if after the 'interview' you realize you're just not that interested in the position anymore? Be polite and without sharing such details at that time, be sure to follow up with a thank you letter, as you would for any other interview. It can be in the form of an e-mail and should be sent immediately, don't let days pass before doing so. This shows that you are responsible and gives you one more opportunity to highlight some of your best attributes and/or accomplishments as it pertains to the job. If you are interested in the position, be sure to express it in this letter. Remember that in a situation where you are considered equal to another candidate, your thank you letter may stand out and set you apart!

Although in a restaurant setting, the interview and answering questions always takes priority first to eating. So remember that and pay attention, making eye contact as you would when interviewing in a traditional office environment. Many times companies take the "dining out" interview approach as it allows them to learn more about you and how you act outside the office. Perhaps the position calls for the right candidate to meet with clients and vendors, know that they will be testing the waters to make sure that you can hold your own and appear graceful, confident and represent the company well. Remember to use all of the table manners you've learned to date and you will never go wrong.

This wraps up our 3-part series on Dining Etiquette. Have you ever been asked to meet for an interview over breakfast or discuss business over dinner? How did it go? I'd love to hear your personal stories.

Have a wonderful week!

What to Wear: Classy Dresses by Shabby Apple

Friday, August 13, 2010

I've received a few e-mails from readers asking for more fashion posts. Truth be told, I have been meaning to begin a regular series called 'What to Wear' several months ago. I have so many wonderful summer post ideas saved in draft mode but I'm quickly realizing that we're already half way through August, so I need to get a move on! I'm going to try to squeeze a couple more summer posts in before autumn is here and then dive head first into some fall fashion and focus on other aspects of the classy woman's wardrobe.

One of the things I love about living in Florida is that summer never really goes away. This means that while every store in town (and online) is busy clearing out sandals, shorts, tanks and pretty dresses to make room for jeans, jackets and pants, I get to scoop up cute finds for an amazing deal like 75% off and wear them for nearly the whole year, without having to wait until next summer. The only downside to that is that I do miss experiencing the weather and fashion of all four seasons.  Now is the time to stock up on swimsuits, cover ups, shorts, sandals and tanks for next summer. Besides, you should still get at least another good month or more out of all your new finds.

A few months ago I stumbled upon a clothing line by Shabby Apple boutique. If you haven't heard of them, they create a lot of beautiful designs, classic lines and some with a trendy little twist. They sell everything from dresses and swimsuits to jewelry and shoes. I even adore their category names like ManhattanCentral Park and Ooh La La. While I haven't purchased anything from their line yet, I wanted to share a few that I have my eye on right now. It's important to have a few dresses on hand for various occasions and events-especially the quintessential little black dress. Sometimes I like to throw on a pretty dress and a pair of heels for no good reason at all-it's a great pick-me-up and it seems to catch my hubby off guard! ;)

Here are some of my Shabby Apple Favorites:

I love navy and red paired together! What can I say? I love nautical style.  How cute is this dress paired with red peep-toe pumps? Perfect for lunch out with the girls or a day at the office.

T'is the season to drench yourself in vibrant color with the polish and femininity of ruffle details and a ladylike knee-length dress. I am craving something in fuscia. How pretty it would be with a gold pair of heeled sandals!

I have always loved polka dots-in fact I own a brown and light cream polka dot dress in my closet-I know, how very Pretty Woman of me. I love the little ruffle on the top part of this dress. It is so feminine and reminds me a bit of the 1950's. A dress like this is timeless, figure flattering and oh-so-pretty.

L'ETE- $86

Appropriately named l'ete, French for summer itself, this striped wrap dress would be cute with a pair of wedges, sandals or even ballet flats or gladiators. The colors themselves remind me of the beach-sand and surf in tan and blue.

This is the perfect dress for late summer and early fall-lovely with a double string of pearls as shown. Worn for a business meeting by day and then straight to a dinner date, this dress could take you anywhere.

Have you bought yourself a lovely new dress this summer? Do any of these catch your eye? Perhaps you're thinking about taking advantage of the end of season sales-What's on your list?

* I was not compensated by Shabby Apple  in any way for this post, these are my personal favorites and opinions.
