Giving With Your Whole Heart

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

I love receiving surprises and gifts, don't you? More than receiving them, I really love giving special presents to friends and family especially unexpected ones when they are least expected. I enjoy the process of finding the perfect item, wrapping it up in pretty paper with some ribbon or finding the perfect gift bag and making or searching for a special card to go along with it.

My favorite part is watching someone open their gift and seeing their expression or reaction. I love to shop for inexpensive llittle treasures and tend to purchase things that friends would go crazy over and is just perfectly 'them'. Sometimes I save them up for their birthday or Christmas but I think the element of the surprise is so much more fun.

I don't do this because I expect anything in return, it just feels good and it makes my heart happy. But I realize that not everyone feels this way about gift giving. It's a shame really how many people I've heard say, 'Ugh, I have to go buy a gift for so-and-so's baby shower, wedding, graduation or fill-in-the-blank. Gift giving shouldn't feel like a chore or an obligation, it should be a fun experience and should be about celebrating the other person who will be on the receiving end. With everyone leading such busy lives and cramming so much into a day, it's not surprising that many things could start to feel more like work when they should be fun.

Last week I spoke to a woman who I hadn't seen in a while and in conversation she remarked, 'You know, I bought _____ a gift for her birthday and never even so much as received a thank you. Don't you think that's rude?' I was surprised to hear it as most people at least verbally acknowlege the gift giver upon opening but in this case it was a large in-home party and gifts were left on a table for the birthday girl to open after everyone had left, so it was a different dynamic. While etiquette would call for such a reply as well as a proper follow-up thank you note for not only attending the party but providing a gift, not everyone follows proper manners and etiquette. We can't become upset and completely outraged when someone doesn't respond the way we expected or hoped they would. The truth is that gift-giving shouldn't involve any expectations whatsoever.

To 'give' means to give whole-heartedly, to give without expecting anything in return-not a thank you, not a note card, not a gift in return-nothing! To give is to truly do so because you want to regardless of the outcome. It shouldn't be something to talk about or gossip about later. You should never feel the need to second guess your gift either. If you truly believed that it was from your heart, was within your budget and you selected it especially for them, all you can ever do is your best, the rest is out of your hands.

I've certainly been guilty of giving out of obligation in the past, (certain office baby showers for co-workers I didn't know very well come to mind). However, the important thing to remember is that if you decide to give it should be because you desire to, not because you feel you're supposed to, because everyone else will be or because you're looking for a certain response to make yourself feel good.

If this has been your experience at times with gift giving I encourage you to be very intentional about your gift giving and see how different you feel afterwards.

What's the best 'just because' gift you were able to give to someone or that you received? What made it so special to you? Leave a comment, I'd love to hear from you!

Just a reminder~I have a little gift that I am looking forward to giving to 2 special readers, if you haven't entered our current giveaway, you can find it HERE. We only have a few entries so far so your odds of winning are pretty good. ;)

Dreamy Decor Photo Inspiration

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

I don't know about you, but as much as I love the written word I find myself drawn in to read blog posts that contain pretty pictures. They always grab my attention and pull me in for more. I wanted to share some of the gorgeous photos that I have stored in my inspiration file.

I hope these images will become as much of an inspiration to you as they have been for me. I've captured them for their use of small spaces or color, others for their elegance and their display of accessories. This modern style with traditional elements meets glamour is typically the style that I like to implement into my interior design projects (client willing of course).

DESIGN INSPIRATION IN PICTURES

I love the clean lines of this bathroom, the lighting just sparkles and it is so serene. It looks clean, airy and hotel-inspired. I would however omit the elyptical machine. This is a Candice Olsen Design.

I love the detail on these elegant, glass kitchen cabinets. All of the elements feel so cohesive, warm, earthy and inviting. While I can't see the floor, it would be great paired with some dark wood hardwood floors.

This is an image from the ever-amazing Designer Sarah Richardson. I am in love with this soaker tub!

So pretty and serene, this Potterybarn room is easy on the eyes and would make a great guest bedroom. I've modelled our guest bedroom/my office after it, I have a replica of that white duvet with blue beading and white furniture. The walls are to be painted the same pale blue/grey color later this month.

I love the crispness of white and I love vintage pieces with a modern twist. I am currently looking for a thrift store version of this writing desk and a chair for our den. This would create  a separate working space for me when guests take over the guest bedroom which also happens to be my office.

As much as I love neutrals, I am drawn to this shade of green as it compliments the white and espresso wonderfully. The dark hardwood floors complete with cream rug and black and white  polka dot sheets are light and refreshing. This wall color would be perfect as an accent wall, a whole room might be too much.

I just love beachy accessories-pale blues, whites, sand, and books to curl up with are recipe for a perfect beach house, along with an ample supply of white furniture and accessories. Everything here is simple and pretty. I believe this image was taken from the HGTV.com site from the 2008 dream home giveaway.

This striped accent wall really makes this room. With a simple set of framed artwork hung above the bed, a pair of pretty, contemporary lamps and some patterned pillows, this room has a light, neutral feel with a pop.

The drapery, desk and wall color are so airy and light so I love that the floors are a contrast with a chocolate brown and cream zebra rug on top of dark hardwood flooring. The lamp is super fun and adds a touch of glamour to the room. This room's look is completed with classic black and white framed photography.

I adore the carved detail of this black desk's wooden legs. Now that is one comfy office chair!

I love the shabby chic, worn-in look of this budget style. A linen table cloth, colorful spray painted tin cans filled with garden blooms and vintage glassware and cutlery. What a pefect outdoor garden lunch setup.

This is another Sarah Richardson Design. I love the detail of these dining chairs in contrast to the soft, plush and pretty banquette seating opposit them. Most of all I stored this pic for the gorgeous, shimmering wallpaper detail. What dining room is complete without a stunning chandelier?

This photo may look familiar because it is from THIS organizing post from last month. I love the feminine details and French country style. This is a room I'd enjoy doing laundry in! I heart fillled apothecary jars.

I believe this is a Candice Olson Design. I love how this large room is used in so many great ways. I would never want to get up in the morning and leave! The soft palette and lighting make it a clear winner!

I love this Sarah Richardson entry design. That chair is beautiful! I would love a set at a dining table. The grand mirror really opens up the space, adds light and provides even more glamour.

* I have filed many of these for years and I kept them for what they bring to the table visually. I do not however have the image sources. If any photos belong to someone reading this blog, please by all means contact me and I'll add your link under the photos.

The photo at the top of this post is what appears on my computer's desktop. It could be the perfect intimate wedding reception for a small gathering or an outdoor room to be enjoyed daily. The white linens, blush roses and outdoor drapery are so soothing. I adore the whimsical touch of the elaborate chandelier hung above the worn look of the wooden table. What beachy area is complete without starfish and seashells?

I love the ocean and dream of living by the sea in a glorious beach house one day. Until then, I can dream!

I Heart Team Canada

Monday, March 1, 2010

Have you all been following the Winter Olympics in Vancouver? I have been following many of the various sports and teams for the past two weeks, but I'd be lying if I told you I had cheered for any other country than my native home country of Canada. While I have be living in the U.S. for the past 3.5 years, and I love to travel and see new countries each year, my heart has always felt most at home in Canada. No matter where I am, when I see a Canadian flag or hear the national anthem, I feel home.

I wanted to show a little love and thank the Team Canada athletes for their awesome effort and performances at this year's Winter Games. They may not have won the most amount of medals-(congratulations to the U.S.A for snagging that title!) but they came out with the highest amount of Gold medals with a total of 14 and they came in third place for the total medal count. One of my favorite things to have watched however was men's hockey with Canada vs. the U.S.A. It was a nail-biting game which was concluded with an overtime goal by Canada and I was so excited for them, I can only imagine how elated they were-what a moment! I celebrate with them.

As a little girl I grew up with lots of snow and cold and cross-country skiing, I learned to play hockey with my neighbors and watched the Toronto Maple Leafs play and even tried curling out as an adult during a work team-building event, which was actually a lot of fun. However, the things that I am most proud to have learned growing up in Canada were to give everything my all, do the best with what I had and to always be courteous, respectful and generous towards others in the process. I was raised that you do not win at all costs, especially if that pertains to your competitors so that is where I feel we are a bit different than other countries. I was so proud to see that Vancouver hosted this year as I know they would have made every effort to be most polite, generous, hospitable and accomodating for all of those that entered their city.

Congratulations to each athlete from every country that traveled many miles and practiced for many long hours just to qualify for the 2010 Winter games. While not every country can go down as #1 in the books, each and every Olympic athlete there were winners just for following their dreams and living out their passions.

I've been tweeting about the Olympics and recently tweeted about my favorite souvenir item from the Vancouver 2010 games. I love these gloves and even though I live in a hot, sunny climate now, this winter was a little chilly and I could have used these! I finally just scooped up a pair from eBay and look forward to wearing them next winter. What a great keepsake from the only Canadian-hosted Olympic games that I have been alive to watch so far! :)

Speaking of winning, if you haven't entered for your chance to win our latest giveaway, it's not too late! Be sure to check it out!
